I thought the fall of the Soviet Union had demonstrated that central planning is destructive, but the conceit of central planners still enjoys excellent health. After all, if politicians and business leaders recognize that the government can play a constructive role in the economy, what justification would there be for subsidies, protectionism and other privileges at public expense? Anti free market ideology is a vast market rationalization favoritism.
