Kates Playground Vibrates
Discovering Jon Bilbao was a milestone and an event for my mind. A shock to my brain cells. Debtor
traditional American ( Carver, Cheever ) truncated stories focused on undertaking high psychological burden and foreign players of which is presented to us a fragment of his life, a time limited and limited existence that does not begin or just, just runs, like our day to day, as I did on the time "Arthur Machen" in its ghostly "A fragment of life" . The
characters who live in Bilbao head in this book name "As a horror story" , or "Under the influence of the comet (one of ten best last year), edited by Page Break, are beings rather than shadow, have chaos, because it triggers in its path, ruining a greater or lesser extent, the lives of people they find in their path. Quue beings fear (terror alluded to the book's title) to life with a partner (and lonely), full of secrets, unhealthy obsessions (but credible and nearby) they do not know well what they really want or what they expect from life. Move and live by pulse, carried away by the tide of everyday life, in the hands of Bilbao reaches heights of magical fantasy, grand, of unhealthy concern that seem to want to escape, when in fact what they try, no know, is run away from themselves and their fears.
The seven stories, seven stories (I love this genre narrative), which make up this book ( Critical Eye Award for Fiction 2008 ), written with a stunning simplicity, with a steady hand and a voice of surprising quality (with this game gives a ubiquitous narrator but, how we, as a distant spectator, does not participate in the cash) begin with "Introduction" , which presents the curious relationship of a couple in a London cosmopolitaque acquires a mysterious sex toy, and that makes us in unintended, but happy, vouyeurs , as also "The Thief of lingerie" , perhaps the only one out of the rest, not quality, but at the same humorous. Both
"After us the deluge" as "Rat" , violence is reflected throbbing, latent living on the dark side within us all and we boast of not having. Stories, these, full of resentful people who surround them and the world in which they live.
"Hunger in the vicinity of the lake" is another example of how accurate is Bilbao at the time of entering into the minds of his characters, bringing, in this case, the experiences of a blocked writer decides fasting to purify the mind, and how a young man who cares tortured pigeons burst into his voluntary retirement. In this story, as in "Strength" , the protagonists see how reality is transformed before your eyes in a more dangerous place than they imagined it was and did not hesitate to rush into voluntary descent into hell of the soul to be reborn from its ashes.
In conclusion, we find the story that gives the book its title, "As a horror story" , story in which a couple decides to leave town to go live in the house of a lonely forest, see how she began to suffer recurring nightmares about squirrels devour her husband. Fears and fantasies that seem dismal start to become reality ...
The force with which Bilbao describes her characters, the way that presents their emotions and their personalities, their life to the emotional brink, is so amazing, that and the only reason this book deserves to be read by everyone.
And that, regardless of who is an exquisite reading you want it never ends. Enough said.
